AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) is a national-level recruitment examination conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) twice a year—in March and August. The official notifications for the exam are released around December/January for the March session, and June/July for the August session.
The March session of AFCAT is held for training courses commencing in January of the following year, while the August session is for courses starting in July of the next year. For instance, the AFCAT held in August 2025 would be for courses starting in July 2026.
It is termed a Common Admission Test because it serves as a unified gateway for recruitment into all three branches of the Indian Air Force:
1. Flying Branch
2. Technical Branch
3. Ground Duty Branches
The AFCAT question paper consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, each carrying 3 marks. For every correct response, 3 marks are awarded. However, there is a negative marking of 1 mark for each incorrect answer. The total duration of the exam is 2 hours.
